Is this Russian girl scamming me? How to recognize scammers

Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

Theoretically, any Russian citizen can get a TOURIST visa to any Western country if they have booked a tour or hotel in the country of choice + plane tickets, spending money (no specific amount!!! but must have a credit card) and medical insurance all IN ADVANCE. They must also have a letter from their employer (ie they must have a real job). However, travel to the West is very expensive for the 90% of Russian citizens that don't live in Moscow/St Petersburg.

In other words, only rich Russians can afford to travel and they can get visas easily. The immigration services of the USA and other Western countries will refuse a visa to anyone considered an overstay risk, ie almost anyone that doesn't come from Moscow and St Petersburg, especially if they are single women and don't have a job.

The chances of your girl actually having a tourist visa are incredibly small. The embassy wouldn't have granted it without the medical insurance certificate first anyway, so her story is BULLSHIT.

On the other hand, it's quite easy to get a SPONSORED visa, but this involves a lot more paperwork, including some of the above (tickets, medical insurance) but also a letter of invitation from the sponsor, copy of the sponsor's passport photo page, proof of residency and a completed sponsor's application form.

hope that helps.

Eddie that helps more than you know. I havent heard from her today. The travel agency has said i will regret not giving her the 650. I told him he made the mistake not telling her about the biocontrol which was her medical info. He should give her the 650, after all he will get it back, help a comrade. I have told her as you recommended that i could meet her in moscow. There have been a hundred emails and and a couple phone calls. Her flight leaves tuesday for the states.

The $1000 to leave is pure bull. You do need to have a medical exam to enter from some areas because of a prevalance of communicable disease, but it is not going to be $650. I am pretty sure the whole thing is a scam.

Of course it's bull. And there is no such thing as a 'biocontrol' visa requirement as far as I've heard. Certainly not for a Russian citizen visiting Europe. Check out the US embassy website if you don't believe me.

But all travellers to and from the Russian federation need medical insurance at least, and this is a visa requirement. I should know...I've been to Russia twice in the last 12 months and I've also sponsored 2 Russian girls to visit me in Stockholm.

Furthermore, a Russian tourist needs to prove that he/she has the financial means to support herself while he/she is visiting the USA (or Europe). Even i have to do that when I visit the USA, and I'm a British citizen. But there's no dollar requirement.

anonymous from United States 2007-09-30, 12:56:56

Whatever you do ...DON'T SEND ANY MONEY!!!....hopefully you haven't already. The travel agency is part of the scam. I can also tell you that a female Russian travel agent from Samara that I corresponded with confirmed that it is incredibly difficult to get a visa without sponsorship.

This is an approximate breakdown of how much it would cost a Russian girl to visit Stockholm for, say, 10 days + what your girl would need to get a tourist visa. And Stockholm is only a 2 hour flight from Moscow:

1. money for round trip train tickets from her city to Moscow +
2. money for round trip plane tickets from Moscow to Stockholm +
3. money for hotel accommodation in Moscow for 7-10 days while she waits for her visa (or money to pay the travel agent to pick it up for her )
4. money for visa, photos, medical insurance etc
5. money to pay for a hotel in Stockholm during her stay in Sweden (paid in advance or she won't get her visa) +
6. enough spending money to convince the authorities that she can support herself during her stay, food, bus links from airports, etc. But there is no specific cash requirement. +
7. a letter from her employer confirming that she is employed and has a job to go back to.

1. train tickets are pretty cheap for Russians, they have a 3rd class = c 2000rub from say Kazan city.
2. plane tickets Moscow-S/holm = c 9000rub
3. take the cheaper option, travel agent picks up her visa = c 5000rub
4. cost of visa, photos, medical insurance etc (slow track 7-10 days) = max 3000 rub (but I'm not sure how much the medical insurance costs for a Russian).
5. hotel rooms in S/holm for 10 days (make it the ABSOLUTE cheapest option, a youth hostel dormitory!!!!) = c 7000 rub
6. spending money (again conservative) = c 10,000rub

Total = c 36000 for a 10-day trip to Stockholm, which is about 1500 bucks. This is for the ABSOLUTE cheapest option. Add 500 bucks or so for the ticket to the USA.

But as I said before, the point is that it's very unusual for a Russian girl to come and visit a guy in a foreign country without having met him first in Russia. Having said that, my 'first Russian girl' came to visit me first, but we'd talked on the phone once a week for 4 months, chatted with a webcam etcetc. I KNEW she wasn't a scam. She wanted me to come to Russia but I was too busy so I took a chance..

There is also a variation on this scam. The 'girl' says that 'she' has already obtained a WORK visa to the USA, but she's short a few hundred bucks for the plane tickets. she scams you for the plane fare.

How are you today???

Now evening in Moscow. This very beautiful time of day for Moscow.

Thanks for your mail.

My love, I has just come from embassy. There such huge turn!!!!

I have come there since the morning and here have just now returned. After embassy I at once have gone to Cafe the Internet to write to you the letter. My dear, I have some news to you. But not all news very good.

I shall begin with good news. My love, I has received my Visa. Now I have the Visa to entrance to the USA.

And today to me have given out my tickets in the USA. My date of departure on October, 2nd. All details of my flight are written in the ticket.

I shall more in detail write to you date and detailed details (number of flight, etc.). I should understand these numbers for the beginning.

My dear, but I have one more news. It is not so pleasant news.

Today in embassy to me have in detail explained all to a detail of my entrance to the USA. To me have told all in detail and clearly.

My love, today I has learned, that for entrance I need to have at itself entrance money. It is money for my residing at the USA.

The government should be is assured that I can independently live in the USA. They should be assured, that I shall not be the poor man, I shall not ask money in the street, etc. That I could arrive to you I should have at myself 1000 $. I should not pay this money, I should show them at entrance to the USA. My love, you understand this problem. My dear, my date of a start already soon, my tickets already at me in hands. I should show this money at the airport in the USA. My love, I have no such big sum of money. And I should ask the help from you as there was not enough time. My dear Ken, you can send me these 1000 $?? I shall return to you them on October, 3rd at the airport after I shall show them. I should show only this money that me have started up in your country. I shall not spend this money, I shall give them to you directly at the airport.

my dear, we have collided with difficulty. And we should solve it together. As now there was only one step up to our meeting. And we should make this step. I think, when on October, 3rd we shall be together, we shall laugh at all it.

My love, you should understand, that you do not spend this money. I should show only them that the government has been assured, that I shall not beg.

My dear, up to our meeting there was not enough time (8 days). My dear, we should solve this problem as soon as possible. As on October, 2nd I already should have 1000 $ to show it on October, 3rd in the USA. But I think, that it is necessary to solve this problem earlier. As suddenly there can be problems in bank or still something. Tomorrow I shall try to learn, where here in Moscow there is a bank of the Western Union.

My love I with impatience wait your mail. Now our meeting depends only on you.

I now in Cafe the Internet shall wait your mail. I hope, that you can answer soon.

I very much love you. My love, me it is very terrible for our meeting. I very much worry.

100000000 kisses.
Eddie i found this correspondence, i guess i missed it.......she did get her grand...but i wont send anymore......

shit!!! sent money? Too bad. But whatever you do, don't feel too down about it. It happens to a lot of guys, believe me. And the majority are too proud to admit it. It's just a pity that your hard-earned cash has gone to some worthless piece of garbage in Yoshtar Ola.

These scammers know which buttons to push. Most guys think they're helping a poor Russian girl. Others think with their dicks and not their grey matter. And the scammers work quickly and put you under pressure to send money. It's an easy trap to fall into.

The shame is that more guys don't use their instincts and do a bit more research.

In this scam, it's true that the girl would need to prove her creditworthiness to be granted a visa, but this would have to be done IN ADVANCE.

PS You should report him/her with mails, mail headers and money transfer documents to your nearest Russian embassy and the US embassy in Moscow.

Yep. It's a scam but if you know it then it's kind of fun to play with them until they ask for cash. Mrs. C's letter from the Mental health department as a reply is classic.

''It's a shame you men need to go on line looking for a women'' - Some CHOOSE to go. In case of a REAL girl, she wrore to me ''It's not a matter of finding ''ANY'' man, but ''RIGHT MAN'' with a lot of common interests. Those who know to tell a REAL girl from a scammer DO succeed in finding a REAL partner to share their future.

''you get what you deserve'' - Are you a perfect superhuman? Well, others are ordinary fallible humans. Have you already made all possible mistakes humans make? Well, others are not as old. Do you damn those who are already in pain? Well, others are not as ''sporting''

''Some men are stupid'' - Agreed, just use a mirror and you'll see one that can't even distinguish between a criminal and a victim, before launching an assault.

''Thinking with their dicks'' - Also typing with them on their keyboard to excoriate wrong individuals

''you men are to desperate'' - Yes, some like you are even more so, desparate to boost their ego at the expense of ordinary mortals when they err. So, why not cater to desparartion for boosting your ego?

1) A rocket-scientist, using his heart, (not dick) was about to ''help a poor girl facing a medial emergency''

Not enough?

2) Read Einstein's own admissions about his Lamda factor, let's know after you skin these guys alive where your ego-trip takes you

Tell your friend NOT TO SEND MONEY!!!!!

we can confirm that she is a scammer if post the name she's using and it turns up in a scam search post a photo and we recognise it. post an advanced header from one of her emails (delete the personal info such as your mail address). Then we can trace her IP. Do you know what an advanced header is? Look in the mail properties and you'll find it:
